Library School scrapbooks
Scope and content note
This collection consists of several scrapbooks which dictate the standard operating procedure for the Library School between the years of 1891-1914. The ephemera in the scrapbooks provide a physical record of the Library School’s curriculum at the time.
The first volume, labeled "Library Blank Forms," consists of blank forms, tracking books/reports/financial, rules and regulations, examples of certification, course descriptions/schedules/tuition, requirements for admission, commencement programs, brochures, and invitations to commencement ceremonies, exhibitions and other events.
The second volume, labeled "Library Class Examination Papers," contains examples of course exams in a variety of subjects relating to library science. In most instances, two copies of the same exam are provided; one is the typed original while the second is the corresponding printed copy which was intended for distribution. A folder of loose leaf exam pages accompanies this volume.
The third volume, labeled "Library Scrapbook," consists of newspaper clippings about the Drexel Institute Library Program and its acquisitions. These include several articles about the G.W. Childs collection, rare books, exhibits, the Women’s Library and the Music Library. Several clippings follow the Walter Smith book thefts, ALA executives, library science education, and policies in various external libraries. Various other ephemera includes exhibition and library programs. A folder of loose paper is included with this volume and contains an overview of the Drexel Institute Library School and a letter from the director of the Pratt Institute School of Library Science in Brooklyn N.Y. requesting the Drexel Institute provide a general summary of its library program for the Training for Librarianship Manual. Alongside a list of recent visiting lecturers, the summary provides an explanation for the structure of the Drexel Institute Library School program and attempts to justify the need for improving library school curricula in general (emphasis on the glass ceiling).
The fourth volume, labeled "Library Class History, Etc.," contains additional newspaper clippings and assorted ephemera such as class schedules, certificates, a commencement speech, graduate programs, standard admission forms/letters, lists of lectures and course materials.
The fifth volume, labeled "Examinations 1901-," consists of copies of Drexel Institute Library School exams compiled per academic year.
The sixth volume, which has no title, contains class schedules, programs, standard admission forms/letters, lists of lectures, lists of graduates, and course materials, as well as newspaper clippings. Some of the material refers to the subsequent careers of Drexel graduates, with several articles about women as librarians. Obituary and memorial pieces for Alice B. Kroeger, Director of the School for nearly two decades, can also be found in this volume alongside correspondence relating to the 1914 disbanding of the Library School.
The seventh, and final volume, labeled "Accession Reports to the Board," consists of reports to the Board of Trustees of Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from the Committee on Library and Reading Room regarding accessions. These reports include detailed lists of books, bindings, and periodicals as well as their prices.
