The first catalog was published in the 1st series of the Journal, v. 4, 1817-1824, The next was made by Isaac Hays, 1824-1834, followed by one published with the Act of Incorporation and By-Laws, 1836. Very early the library committee functioned as a unit for some years, became the library and publication committee, then again has been called simply the library committee. In this collection we have old documents, dated administrative matters, and a list of restricted books as of 1824. These so-called librarian's books record the day to day accessions for the dates covered. In 1885 the card catalog was started by E. J. Nolan, replacing the ledger form of catalog. On the title-page of the 1856-65 volume is a list of librarians and dates of service, signed by Nolan. Edward J. Nolan himself became librarian in 1862 and was for years the only paid member of the staff of the Academy. The Journals cover the years 1845-50, 1850-56; 1856-65, 1865-73, 1873-76, 1876-85.

The miscellaneous group of documents, reports, lists and evaluations of
the library are here grouped together for convenience rather than for subject
unity. In 1940 the Director asked all curators to give a detailed evaluation of
the library holdings in his speciality. Nine such reports are in the file
signed by the curators. F. W. Pennell made an additional report on the articles

John Percy Moore (1869-1965) was a Professor of Zoology at the University of Pennsylvania from 1912 to 1939, an Assistant Curator at the Academy of Natural Sciences from 1902 to 1938, and held several positions between 1920 and 1956 at the Ludwick Institute, which offered free lectures and courses in the natural sciences.
