Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, Lithographs
Scope and Contents
Hawkins was an English anatomist, osteologist and paleontologist, but apparently confined his interests to skeletal aspects, stressing comparative osteology as an approach to artistic representations. One paper appeared in the Academy's Proceedings for 1874, "On the Pelvis of Hadrosaurus", and another in New York in 1870 on Ichthyosaurus. He was elected to the Academy as a corresponding member in 1868. These colored lithographs, are all labeled "Unpublished. Annonymous." However printed on each plate is the name of the species, information about its habitat and a statement that it was published in 1829 by Parbury Allen and Co., London. The subjects are mammals and birds, apparently from India. Two names as collectors appear, i.e. Dr. Wallich and Major Farquhar.
