Lithographic Proofs of South Carolina Fishes
Scope and Contents
These eight colored proofs of fishes were laid in a copy of John Edwards Holbrook's Ichthyology of South Carolina (1860). The plates for this edition were done by A. J. Ibbotson and Antoine Sonrel and colored by Jacques Burkhardt. These loose proofs were possibly intended for the second volume, which was never published. The plates are labeled as follows: Plate 1. Bairdiella argyroleuca; Leiostomus xanthurus obliguus Plate 2 Epinephelus erythrogaster Plate 3 Centripristis atrarius; Triloburus trifureus Plate 4 Diplectrum fascienlare; Sciaenops ocil1atus Plate 5 Cynoscion carolinensis; Cynoscion regalis Plate 6 Micropogon undulates; Stillifer lanceo1atus; Plates 7 and 8 are not named.
Many of the figures have manuscript names, the chirography identified by Henry W. Fowler as that of Theodore Gill. The latter studied the Academy's volumes and published a paper about Holbrook's fishes.
