Scope and Contents

William Warder Cadbury was a Philadelphia Quaker doctor who spent his professional life as a medical missionary in China, where he established a garden of orchids and other plants. The paintings in this collection were commissioned by Dr. Warder from a Filipino painter known only as "Gomez." The collection includes the paintings, correspondence, writings, notes on plants, lists of species, photographs, maps, and biographical information.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Some materials were given to the Academy by the Cadbury family in the Spring of 1964, while others were transferred to the archives by the Botany Department in 2000 November and 2016.

Related Materials

William's brother, John Warder Cadbury III, worked at the Academy as an entomologist. Collections 735 and 2010.203 document his time here, so these collections may be useful to researchers interested in the Cadbury family.
