Even at the age of 14, this author was keeping notebooks of his field observations and with other enthusiasts, i.e. friends at the Central High School, and in the local Agassiz Club, preparing information for catalogs of various groups of animals. Notebooks and illustrated records, as well as correspondence with his colleagues are found in this collection.

The Thomas Say papers collection includes biographical information and family documents, scientific correspondence, annotations to various published books, study notes and bibliographical insect references, as well as papers concerning Say's connection with the Academy.

Scope and Contents Geologist, educator, traveler, businessman and philanthropist, he was one of the most important personages in this Academy's history. While not a founder, he was elected president in 1817, which position he held until his death in 1840. William Warder Cadbury was a Philadelphia Quaker doctor who spent his professional life as a medical missionary in China, where he established a garden of orchids and other plants. The paintings in this collection were commissioned by Dr. Warder from a Filipino painter known only as "Gomez." The collection includes the paintings, correspondence, writings, notes on plants, lists of species, photographs, maps, and biographical information.
