Abstract

Edward James Nolan (1846-1921) served as the librarian at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia from 1869 until his death. During his tenure as librarian, he performed research on and wrote the history of the Academy which was completed in 1909. This collection contains material collected by Nolan for his history, including transcriptions of early minutes, deeds, biographies, news clipppings, letters and reminiscences of colleagues.

Overview Joseph Mellick Leidy (1823-1891), one of the great American scientists of the 19th century, possessed a vast knowledge of the natural world. Best known as the Father of American vertebrate paleontology, he also pioneered the fields of parasitology and protozoology, and was the preeminent anatomist of his time. This collection consists of more than 18,000 incoming letters receieved by the Academy betwen 1812 and 1920 and assembled by corresponding secretaries, Edward J. Nolan and James A. G. Rehn. A separate card index file assembled circa 1963 and arranged by last name of correspondent provides summary details about most letters.
