Scope and Contents From the Collection:

This collection consists of photographs of instructors, students, and classrooms in the Department of Domestic Science and Arts. Also included are photos taken in Wissahickon Creek and three team pictures from the women's basketball team. Identified faculty and students in the collection include: Albert P. Brubaker, Ellen Morris, Katherine J. Coolidge, Helen M. Spring, Anna Anthony, Maude G. Hopkins.

Scope and content note

This collection includes one bound notebook of the minutes of the Drexel Institute Board of Trustees Committee on Instruction. The minutes were compiled by the committee's secretary, Addison B. Burk. Other committee members mentioned include Dr. Howe, Mr. Steele, Mr. Banes, and Dr. MacAlister (president). The main topic noted in these entries is the hiring of new instructors and their salaries. The volume contains five pages of text, plus three loose sheets inserted.

This series is arranged into subseries by department: art, domestic science and arts, engineering and science, library school, mechanic arts, secretarial, physical education, and unidentified. The bulk of the photos are from 1903-1904 and 1914-1915. Domestic science is the predominant subject. Folders are arranged chronologically within subseries; folders marked with prefix OV are located in box 2.

Series 2: Hollis Godfrey, 13 folders, consists of writings by Godfrey, including “The Academic Budget”, correspondence and administrative matters connected with the Office of the Presidency. World War I is represented in letters from Drexel students who were part of the S.A.T.C. (Student Army Training Corps). There are also pamphlets and correspondence on the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of Drexel from 1916.

Overview Hollis Godfrey (1987-1936) served as president of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from 1913 to 1921. He was educated as an engineer at Tufts, Harvard, and MIT, where he also taught. While living in Boston he was an administrator at the School of Practical Arts in Boston.
