William Blanchard Drawings of Vertebrates

These drawings of skulls and their special parts were found with the Academy's archives. Only the first sketch bears Blanchard's name, but the 46 were together in a parcel, and all are of the same type of work. One drawing is prepared on paper watermarked 'Whatman, 1856."

William Darlington Annotations

Scope and Contents

Darlington was a physician, soldier, U.S. Congressman, businessman and a pioneering 19th century botanist in southeastern Pennsylvania. His copy of I. Finch's "Travels in the United States of America and Canada" (London, 1833) contains pencil annotaions and the author's presentation inscription.

William Dell Hartman, Writings

Scope and Contents

Physician, botanist, conchologist, entomologist and mineralogist, Hartman was curator of the Chester County, Pa. Cabinet of Natural Sciences, in 1842. Several of his publications on shells were issued by the Academy during the time he was a correspondent. The papers consist of (a) 'A Bibliographic and Synonymic Catalogue of the genus Helecina Lam." and (b) Annotations about mollusks of Chester County.

William Farr Smith-Vaniz illustrations

Dr. William Smith-Vaniz was on the Academy's Ichthyological Department staff from 1972-1991, serving as curator from 1975-1991. These illustrations were created to accompany papers published in the Academy's journals.

Transferred to the Academy archives by Dr. Smith-Vaniz in 1990.

William Gambel, Papers

Scope and Contents Ornithologist, botanist and pioneer in exploring west of the Mississippi, he attracted the attention of Thomas Nuttall, who encouraged and guided him. When little more than 21, he undertook an ornithological and botanical trip across the continent at Nuttall's instigation exploring northern New Mexico, Santa Fe'to the Colorado River, Mexico and southern California. William Gilson Farlow Papers

American fungologist, Farlow did most of his work at Harvard. Whens studying the Academy's collection of type species of fungi which were collected, named and donated by L.D. von Schweinitz, he left the various pages of notes laid in the catalog of Schweinitz herbarium. The typed memorandum is entitled: "Notes on Certain Species [49] of Fungi in the Schweinitz Herbarium at Philadelphia." The second item is a letter signed W.G. Farlow

William Greene Binney Papers

Scope and Contents Binney, a native of Boston, and son of Amos Binney, a founder of the Boston Society of Natural History, was a conchologist specializing in land shells.
