Scope and Contents

The Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital of Philadelphia Department of Nursing Administration records are a collection of materials relating to the hospital’s nursing administration throughout the 1970s. Generally, these records document different levels of the administrative work that supported the School of Nursing. The research value of the records lies in its portrayal of nursing protocols, documentation of committee activities, and plans surrounding moving into a new Hospital Tower in 1979. The Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital Department of Nursing Administration records collection is arranged into the following four series, within which records are organized alphabetically by folder title: Administrative Organization, Committees, Move-In Materials, and Nursing Protocols.

Series I: Administrative - This series represents records that offer information on the general affairs of the Office. Such organization includes labor contracts between Hahnemann and various groups of employees, audits of nursing procedures, and other internal documentation.

Series II: Committees - This series contains records that document the proceedings from various committees or other meeting activities, such as meeting minutes.

Series III: Move-In files- These records focus on the planning documents that went into the expansion of the hospital to a new tower in 1979. This includes documentation of materials from the Hospital Move-In Committee, communications on coordinating the move, and inventories.

Series IV: Nursing protocols - This series is composed of manuals and policy documents that detail the best practices for various nursing duties, meant to serve as guides and teaching materials for staff and student personnel. These protocols range from those which apply to specific units within Hahnemann Hospital to outlines of general nursing procedures.

Historical note

The records in this collection represent a time in which the Hahnemann College of Medicine and Hospital’s Department of Nursing underwent numerous developments, beginning with Nursing Service and Nursing Education becoming two separate units in 1960. Spanning the years 1968-1981, the records reflect the administrative work that underpinned the growth and evolution of the Department of Nursing. A. Elspeth Anderson, R.N., documented this progress through her roles as Associate Hospital Administrator and Director of the Department of Nursing. Anderson additionally served as the chairwoman of the planning sub-committee for patient care floors for the 1979 New Hospital Tower, the records of which are represented in this collection as well.
