Drexel Institute of Technology anniversaries collection
Scope and content note
Materials in the Drexel Institute of Technology Anniversaries Collection provide a unique perspective in the planning efforts of 4 anniversary celebrations at Drexel, also known as Founder's Day. The materials span 1951-1966, but each anniversary celebration is held once every 5 years: 1951, 1956, 1961, and 1966. Materials are all in paper format and include correspondence, memoranda, notes, programs, program outlines, agendas, speech transcripts, brochures, committee files, invoice and expenses, guest and seating lists, official resolutions, press coverage such as clippings and newsletters, and other related materials. Of interest are the correspondence files that provide insight on invited guests, alumni citation nominations, logistics, and planning for the three day event.
The collection is arranged chronologically in four series: 60th Anniversary Convocation (1951); 65th Anniversary Convocation (1956); 70th Anniversary Convocation (1961); 75th Anniversary Convocation (1966).
The 60th Anniversary Convocation series, arranged alphabetically, include materials that cover the invitation, planning, and logistics of the celebratory event. Materials include correspondence, itineraries, speech transcripts, guest lists and seating plan, panel discussion papers, clippings, and programs. Of interest is the correspondence between Drexel officials and the 60th anniversary special guests, Georges-Augustin Bidault (1899-1983) and his wife. Bidault was active in the French Resistance, and after World War II he served as foreign minister and prime minister on several occasions. He later (1961) joined the Organisation armée secrète (OAS), a far right paramilitary organization. At the 1951 convocation, Drexel awarded Bidault with an honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. The series also includes all the panel discussion materials which include transcripts of the opening remarks and the papers discussed by distinguished members of the panel.
The 65th Anniversary Convocation, 70th Anniversary Convocation, and 75th Anniversary Convocation series are both arranged alphabetically. All three series include materials that cover the planning and invitations of the celebratory events. Materials include correspondence, speech transcripts, programs, and press coverage such as newsletters and clippings. The 70th Anniversary series includes lists of candidates selected for alumni citations and a program drafts. The 75th Anniversary Convocation series is the only one that provides information pertaining to expenses for the event. Also note, materials from the last series were in a binder that had the name "[Dean] George C. Galphin" on the cover.
