Biographical Note
Richard David Breslin was born on December 15, 1937, in Red Bank, NJ. He received his B.S. from Villanova University in 1960, majoring in English, philosophy, and education. Breslin received an M.A. in the administration of higher education from The Catholic University of America in 1965 and an M.A. in theology from Augustine College in 1966. He received his Ph.D. in higher education from The Catholic University of America in 1969.
Dr. Breslin began his academic career in 1968 as an assistant professor in Villanova University's College of Arts and Sciences. In 1972, he was appointed dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and served until 1978. From 1978 to 1980, Dr. Breslin served as assistant chancellor for academic affairs for the State of New Jersey. He was appointed academic vice president at Iona College in 1980 and president of the University of Charleston in West Virginia in 1984.
Dr. Breslin served as the tenth president of Drexel from September 1, 1988 to 1994. His accomplishments include the planning and execution of the Centennial celebration in 1991, creation of the Faculty Senate, an organization that gave the faculty more input than ever before in the university’s governance; the dedication of the Bennett S. LeBow Engineering Center and the Center for Automation Technology, a $30 million engineering education complex; the acquisition of the former Philadelphia Evening Bulletin building in 1993, now called One Drexel Plaza; the signing of an education and research alliance with Hahnemann University in 1992, the first formal relationship between Drexel and its future medical school; and a renovation of the Academic Building, acquired in 1988, into a state-of-the-art home for the culinary arts and photography programs. Dr. Breslin introduced Building a Bridge to Our Future, his Strategic Plan through 1996, to the University on November 2, 1992. The plan was to provide for the financial equilibrium of the institution, and resulted in the Enhanced Educational Experience for Engineers curriculum being implemented on a full scale. This E4 program became a national model for integrated learning and was adopted by the College of Engineering as the Drexel Curriculum. During his term alumni giving also doubled, from $5 million to $10 million, and the endowment also increased from $65 million to $90 million. He also negotiated with Pennsylvania lawmakers to restore aid that had been cut for private colleges and universities.
A disruptive event during the Breslin era was when Drexel maintenance workers, members of the Teamsters Local 115, went on a 14-week strike from September 14 to December 20, 1992, protesting unfair labor practices and wasteful spending. The strike was settled when union members voted unanimously to accept a proposed contract that included a wage increase.
Dr. Breslin announced his resignation September 20, 1994, citing a decision to pursue unspecified opportunities, possibly in business. According to an Inquirer article that ran two days later, the surprise announcement prompted widespread speculation that Drexel trustees had forced the resignation because of deepening money problems and declining enrollment. Dr. Breslin's resignation was not effective until June 30, 1995, but C.R. Pennoni took over in November 1994 as president in the interim.
After leaving Drexel, Dr. Breslin went on to become the executive vice president and provost at St. Louis University and then the senior major gift officer and director of development at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He and his wife, Julia Galligan Breslin, have three sons, David, John, and Marc.

Processing Information
Outgoing Correspondence series is made up entirely of photocopies of outgoing letters from Breslin to other people. It is an internal only series since the files are only arranged roughly chronologically by month and year, not by any real usable subject or naming scheme.
Some refoldering was necessary as some files were still in hanging folders, but not much relabeling of folder titles was needed, although some were altered for clarification. Though the collection was organized intellectually into series, general physical arrangement of the records was not changed.
