Scope and Contents
Senator, judge, cotton planter and naturalist, he opened his home in Claiborne, Alabama to many explorers and collectors who were passing through. Elected a correspondent of the Academy in 1832, he, several times, attended courses of lectures at the Academy of Natural Sciences, as he did also in New Haven.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Gift of a descendant, Mrs. Samuel Woods, 1908 who had found them among family papers. Two letters from Mrs. Woods gives biographical details of the Judge and replies from E. J. Nolan are preserved with this collection.
