Chronometer

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: ANSP-1994-012-Artifact

Scope and Contents

While this chronometer has no direct connection to any expeditions done by the academy, it is still a great piece of a larger collection. This maritime tool is in good condition and still ticks when wound with a small key that resides in the upper right hand corner of the chronometer box. The chronometer itself is situated inside of a square wooden box with a glass top on its wooden lid. There is a small ivory plaque on the front of the box that reads: Lilley and Son 1751 London. 1751 stands for the model number of the chronometer and not the year. A small note and a receipt were inside of the chronometer box and their details are listed in the general note section. There is a small keyhole on the front of the box but the key did not come with the box. There is a handle on the right and left side of the box so it can be carried even though it is very heavy. On the inside of the lid there is a small sticker that reads:(NEGUS Nautical Instruments 69 Pearl Street, New York, NY...181-J2K 302 l.g.) The face of the chronometer reads: (Lilley & Son, Makers to the Admiralty, the Indian & Colonial Governments...10 London St. London.EC) The time reads: 3:44. A marine chronometer is a clock which is precise enough to be used as a portable time standard; it can therefore be used to determine longitude by means of celestial navigation.
