Scope and Contents

This is a collection of records related to the Academy's Bicentennial Symposium. Materials include: correspondence between Goulden and the symposium speakers; brief biographical sketches of the speakers; symposium programs, brochures, invitations, and tickets; manuscripts and galley proofs of papers given at the symposium; a published symposium volume, edited by Goulden, entitled The Changing Scenes in the Natural Sciences 1776-1976; and six audio tapes of speakers at the symposium. The collection also includes several documents relating to an ecological study of Fairmount Park made in 1970 in preparation for Philadelphia's Bicentennial celebration.

Biographical / Historical

In honor of the nation’s bicentennial, the Academy of Natural Sciences organized a symposium on natural history. The symposium was held in April, 1976. Speakers from the Academy and from other institutions made presentations on topics ranging from changing ecosystems to evolutionary biology to population genetics. Clyde Goulden was chairman of the Bicentennial Symposium Committee.
