Scope and Contents Although most of these treatises appeared in the Academy's early serials, some predated that time. A list of the articles by some 81 naturalists has been prepared and is available for reference. The papers themselves deal with all sorts of natural history subjects, some of the more prolific authors being: Spencer F. Baird, John Cassin, Charles Girard, Gerard Troost, Lardner Vanuxem, and S. Scope and Contents A native of Holland, Troost was educated in the universities of Leyden and Amsterdam and studied mineralogy with the Abbe Hauy of Paris. After coming to Philadelphia he was a founder and first president of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Later he moved to New Harmony, Indiana, with Maclure, Say and Lesueur, then became professor at the University of Nashville and subsequently the State Geologist of Tennessee. Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of 704 letters addressed to Haldeman, Constantine Rafinesque and Thomas Say, with a letterbook of 22 letters written by Haldeman. In subject, the letters refer to paleontology, conchology, entomology, ichthyology, to Indian relics and to spelling reform.
