Painting was conserved by at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1982.
General
Born at Bois-le-hluc, Holland, settled in Philadelphia in 1810. He was the most distinguished of the early American geologists and chemists. Was a founding member and first President of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia from 1812-1817. Was for two years a member of the New Harmony Community under William Maclure. Was state geologist of Tennessee and Professor of chemistry and geology at the University of Nashville, where he died August 17, 1850.
