Scope and Contents From the Collection:

This collection consists of single and group printing blocks and plates commissioned for use by the Academy of Natural Sciences. The plates and blocks range from animal figures, signature plates, letterhead, to special invitations. The printing blocks are made of wood with metal outlines fastened to the wood. There are solid metal printing plates and also metal roller printing plates. Each block or plate has a general note attached to it with more detail.

Edward James Nolan, Commemorative volumes of the Centenary celebration of the Academy

Scope and Contents

This collection represents a specially prepared copy of Volume 15 of the Journal of the Academy, second series, 1912. The original letterpress copy is used as a base with interleaving and manuscript material inserted by the Recording Secretary, E. J. Nolan and presented to the Academy. The inserts consist of portraits, photographs, letters, reports, reminiscences, news clippings and many miscellaneous items. A total of 43 photographs, 53 letters, and 31 other items complete the volume.

Edward James Nolan Documents and Correspondence on the History of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia

Abstract

Edward James Nolan (1846-1921) served as the librarian at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia from 1869 until his death. During his tenure as librarian, he performed research on and wrote the history of the Academy which was completed in 1909. This collection contains material collected by Nolan for his history, including transcriptions of early minutes, deeds, biographies, news clipppings, letters and reminiscences of colleagues.
