African Rhinoceros with Tick Birds Sculpture

Scope and Contents

This is a plaster cast of the African Rhinoceros with Tick Birds sculpture created by James Lippitt Clark. Clark was known for his excellent sculptor work with African animals and sculpted many Rhinos in his lifetime. This Black Rhino statue stands thirty inches tall and forty inches wide. It was created in 1912 and said to be on of Clark's best works.

Overview Albert Laessle (1877-1954), was a Philadelphia sculptor who combined science and art to create realistic animal studies. This collection includes four of his bronze sculptures, 2 modeled while Laessle studied in Paris, 1906 (of turtles), 2 others while in Philadelphia, 1908,1918 (a polar bear and an eagle). The works measure from 8 x 11 x 8 cm. to 54 x 57 x 95 cm. According to their inscriptions, three sculptures were cast at the Roman Bronze Works Foundry in New York. Also includes 1 bronze...

Inuit Statue

Scope and Contents

This statue is of three inuit tribe members and a bear. The statue is made from Soapstone. The statue once belonged to the Academy of Natural Sciences Gift Shop and was set to be sold. Since it was not sold at first, the Women's Committee at the Academy purchased the statue following an exhibition on Inuits and Alaska.

Old Bushman Sculpture

Scope and Contents The sculpture was created by Malvina Hoffman around 1930. This was created during the time when Hoffman was working for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, IL. Her skill at representation of the human form allowed her to render the graceful beauty of her subjects during their daily activities. This project resulted in the largest single corpus of her work. Samuel Murray Statues of Edward Nolan

Scope and Contents

Two nearly identical statues of Edward Nolan sculpted in 1909 by Samuel Murray. Nolan is wearing a suit and tie, carry a book in his right hand and his left hand is resting in his trouser pocket. Nolans eye glasses are hanging from his jacket pocket.
