Overview Born in Scotland and educated as a teacher, botanist and horticulturist, Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) moved to Philadelphia in 1807. On May 16, 1824, when Nuttall embarked at Liverpool for a trip to Boston, a young companion, Joseph Whitfield (aged sixteen, laborer), was with him. He was probably the son of Nuttall's Uncle's farmer, Thomas Whitfield, and it is likely that Joseph came to America as an assistant to Nuttall.
