Alexander Wilson, Copper plates

Scope and Contents

Engraved copper plates from which 10 of the illustrations of Wilson's American Ornithology were printed, namely pls. 1-5, 7-9 of vol. 1 and pls. 10-11 of v. 2. 26 x 33 cm. These were engraved by Alexander Lawson and are accompanied by a carbon of the letter of appreciation of the Academy to the donor.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains architect's plans, etchings, engravings, photographs and published pictures showing the various Academy buildings from its founding. The collection is divided by external depictions and internal depictions. The latter includes some exhibits, research areas, different versions of the library, renovations, etc. A partial account was included in the Academy's Proceedings for 1901.

Overview Helen Elizabeth Lawson, the second daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth De Scaife Lawson, was born in Philadelphia sometime in or about the year 1808. An accomplished scientific illustrator, her contemporaries described her work to be "so perfect as certainly leave nothing to be desired", and H.A. Dutch anatomist and embryologist, professor at Groningen University and correspondent of the Academy of Natural Sciences. Engraver's proofs of 5 plates for an article on Amphioxus, intended for publication in the Academy's Journal, centennial volume of 1912. Also, a statement by E. J. Nolan, Oct. 19, 1912, explaining why the paper was not published in that volume.
