Overview Dr. Amos Russell Thomas [1827-1895] was a surgeon and prominent professor of anatomy. He was born and resided in New York until he relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1854. There he was appointed to be a demonstrator of anatomy at the Pennsylvania Medical University, and was Chair of Anatomy from 1856 to 1866. Overview Andrew Garrett, 1823-1887, was an American explorer, self taught naturalist and artist specializing in malacology and ichthyology. Many of his works are considered classics, including his multi-volumed catalog Fische der Sundsee, and particularly his "Terrestrial Mollusca Inhabiting the Society Islands" (JANSP 9: 17-114), which formed the basis for the important work of Hartman and Crampton. Scope and Contents This expedition, the first official one of the Academy, included J. E. Ives, Roberts LeBoutillier, Witmer Stone and Frank C. Baker in the party. Arriving on the 22nd of February, they covered the territory of the northwestern part of Yucatan and the Mexican highlands in the vicinity of Orizaba.
