Overview Eldridge Reeves Fenimore Johnson (1899-1986) was a pioneer in the development of underwater photography and was also an explorer, yachtsman and researcher. His interests in underwater photography developed during World War II when he enlisted in Naval Research and worked with underwater demolition and photography. Collection consists of manuscript pages for articles published in the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences, 1824-1825; two annotated engraved plates of "an extinct species of crocodile not before described" from vol.4, part 1 of the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences, 1824; and an extract of Publication Committee minutes, 1826 signed by Harlan.

Scope and Contents American conchologist, friend of Louis Agassiz, member of the National Museum staff, accompanying the personnel on the North Pacific Exploring Expedition, 1853-56, under the command of Capts. Ringgold and Rodgers. Later moved to Chicago where he planned a monumental work on mollusks, for which he borrowed material from a great many institutions.
