Overview Crawford Hallock Greenewalt (1902-1993) was a chemical engineer and the President of the DuPont Company from 1948 to 1962. He had a passion for the natural sciences, and combined his love of ornithology with photography. He was especially known for his high speed photographs of hummingbirds. The ANSP offered high-end educational travel "expeditions" in the 1980s and 1990s, and Mr. Wright participated in at least the nine excursions represented here, across South and Central America, Eastern Canada, Mongolia, and the Antarctic between 1974 and 1997. Scope and Contents These four quarto sized volumes contain 58 pages of watercolors, each page measuring 34 x 27 cm., with varying image sizes. Each volume includes a dated title page and a contents page, handwritten in black ink, and each plate is followed by a hand written description. The watercolors are notable for the portrayal of the iridescence on the plumage of the hummingbirds, a technique invented by Baily, accomplished by the use of gold and silver leaf.
