Scope and Contents On October 1, 1891, a rorqual whale was cast up on the beach at Ocean City, New Jersey, was photographed by Joseph P. Remington and later described by E. D, Cope. This skeleton, along with other type specimens of whales occupied a great deal of space in the Academy and in 1951 it was planned to transfer them to some other museum in the United States. Scope and Contents Catalogs, lists, indexes and observations relating to the Academy's mollusks, Crustacea and chilopods. Includes also Isaac Lea's original list of soft parts of Unionidae, a collection presented to the Academy in January 1877. The notes by Lea begin with the date 1863. Scope and Contents Reports of the committees appointed to review each paper read before the Academy, receipts of papers for the Proceedings and Journal and acknowledgements of manuscripts received, were all entered in bound ledgers of permanent records. Scope and Contents

The Council was first mentioned in the bylaws of 1866. Since that time it has passed through many changes in its functions, responsibilities and authority. These are recorded in the editions of 1869, 1893, 1924 and 1951. The minutes of the Council meetings have been preserved in three folio minutebooks, covering the years 1870 to 1951. Also present are two categories of loose documents, i. 9. annual lists of members, 1887 to 1914, and the attendance rolls for the same years.
