These so-called librarian's books record the day to day accessions for the dates covered. In 1885 the card catalog was started by E. J. Nolan, replacing the ledger form of catalog. On the title-page of the 1856-65 volume is a list of librarians and dates of service, signed by Nolan. Edward J. Nolan himself became librarian in 1862 and was for years the only paid member of the staff of the Academy. The Journals cover the years 1845-50, 1850-56; 1856-65, 1865-73, 1873-76, 1876-85.

Daily records made on trips to Europe, 1848 and 1875; local trips, in four books, for the dates 1873-82, 1877; 1880-83, 1885-87; notes on the mineralogical exhibits in the British Museum and in the Louvre, Paris; field notebook labeled "Notes on Myxomycetes" 1884-86; and Luray Cavern notebook and letter.

Samuel Nicholson Rhoads, Papers

Scope and Contents

Naturalist, ornithologist, mammalogist, book dealer and businessman, Samuel Rhoads wrote particularily on the local fauna of birds and mammals. The journals of his various expeditions contain mostly natural history data. Those written from Ecuador and Guatemala include also information about the countries. He was a founder of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, its Secretary and later its President.
