Very early the library committee functioned as a unit for some years, became the library and publication committee, then again has been called simply the library committee. In this collection we have old documents, dated administrative matters, and a list of restricted books as of 1824. The miscellaneous group of documents, reports, lists and evaluations of
the library are here grouped together for convenience rather than for subject
unity. In 1940 the Director asked all curators to give a detailed evaluation of
the library holdings in his speciality. Nine such reports are in the file
signed by the curators. F. W. Pennell made an additional report on the articles
