Overview

Dr. James L. Kitchen was a prominent Philadelphia physician and homeopath who was born on March 8, 1800. Dr. Kitchen graduated from the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine in 1822 and continued his studies in Europe until 1824. He became acquainted with homeopathy in the late 1830s and was an instrumental part of the founding and administrative function of the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kitchen also worked in public health as Port Physician, and maintained a practice in Philadelphia from 1824 until weeks before his death on August 19, 1894. The James L. Kitchen Collection is comprised of materials from Dr. Kitchen’s time studying medicine in Philadelphia and in Europe, and range in time from 1820 to 1826. The materials are mainly class/lecture notes from lectures given at the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine, and abroad in Paris, France. These materials would be valuable to researchers studying the study of medicine in the early 19th century, both in the United States and in Europe, as well as researchers studying the practice of medicine in the early 19th century.
