As of 1989, the scrapbook had been disbound and pages placed in polypropylene sleeves. Scrapbook pages were extremely friable, damage to edges (containing captions) was advanced. This scrapbook had been microfilmed (along with others) presumably in the 1980s. There are two reels (master and duplicate) available; use is limited due to lack of registrations and targets which were not included in the filming. Limited negatives and slides have been produced from select images. Photographs and other paper items had been glued to acid support pages and accelerated degradation had been noted between the time when some negatives were made (1980s) and the present (3/1993). Artifacts were falling off the page and glue stains had darkened. Because of these concerns (and being aware that the original arrangement had been recorded on microfilm), photograph curator, Michael Angelo, had decided, in consultation, that the scrapbook should be disbound into mylar sleeves and acid-free folders, with the captions recorded on acid-free paper. Five original pages have been left intact because of adhesive resistance. Several other pages where items had been removed have been retained as samples. Future preservation action may include the following: Comprehensive negative and slide duplication of items. Restoration of photographs and other paper items. Remounting treated items on acid-free board (using microfilm as guide).
