Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the administrative records of Beta Phi Mu, Sigma chapter (Drexel University) from 1968 through 2013, as well as administrative material created by Beta Phi Mu National (1948-2004). The collection is divided into two series: Series 1 consists of material generated by Beta Phi Mu, Sigma chapter, and Series 2 consists of material generated by Beta Phi Mu National.

Sigma chapter material includes by-laws, documentation of the chapter's establishment, minutes of the annual general membership meeting and of meetings of the Board of Directors/Executive Council, newsletters, initiation reports sent to National, and scholarships and awards sponsored by Sigma. Box 1 Folder 1 contains photos of the initiation of the founding members of Sigma chapter.

National material includes information about the initiation ritual, constitution and by-laws, a history of the organization published in 1957, newsletters, and correspondence.

Administrative History

Beta Phi Mu, International Library Science Honor Society, was founded in 1948 at the University of Illinois. The purpose of the society is to recognize high scholarship in the study of librarianship and to sponsor professional projects. Members are chosen based on academic merit after completing an accreditated Master's degree in Library and Information Science.

Drexel University is home to the Sigma chapter, which was established in 1969, with the support of Guy Garrison, dean of what was then known as the Graduate College of Library Science (currently the College of Computing and Informatics.)
