Historical note

The Drexel Institute first applied to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for accreditation to grant doctoral degrees in engineering and the sciences in 1959. The state denied the request, citing inadequate facilities and financial support, and a shortage of faculty members holding PhDs. A second application, submitted in 1965, was approved, accreditating Drexel to grant doctoral degrees in materials engineering, applied mechanics, chemistry, and physics. Drexel granted its first doctoral degrees in the College of Engineering and Science in 1967.
