Scope and Contents

While fundamentally a banker and businessman, Martindale was an accomplished naturalist, with interests largely in the fields of botany and entomology. Once treasurer and councilman of the Academy, vice-president of the American Entomological Society and Corresponding secretary of the Botanical section; also a member of the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia. His collection of insects was purchased by the Academy. His botanical collection is a prized possession of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, donated by Smith, Kline and French.

Included are 339 letters and a bound catalogue of Martindale's collection of Lepidoptera.

Donated to the American Entomological Society by the author's widow in 1893 and deposited in the Academy's archives in 1949.
