Scope and Contents

The bylaws adopted in 1924, which were implemented the following year, placed the administration under a Board of Trustees. The two volumes of minutes since then are in the hands of the secretary of the Board and housed in the vault in the administrative office. The personnel of the Board, with portraits, short biographies and terms of office since 1955 is outlined in a special publication. Informational documents, letters, etc. are assembled in this collection.

The documents included here were usually transcribed into the minutes after they were accepted by the members, altho not always fully recorded. Reports are as follows: 1824 Keating); 1829 (Morton); 1836 (Carson); 1938 (Stewardson); 1840-41 (Chaloner); 1842-44 (Zantzinger); 1846-47 (Lambert ); 1848-49 (Leidy); 1850 (Powel); 1851-55, 1864 (Rand); 1866 (Wood); 1923-30 (Rehn). The rough minutes of the secretary are scattered entries from 1850-70, written by Powel, Rand, Moss and Howell.

Entomology Field Notes and Specimen Catalogues

Scope and Contents Researchers will find handwritten field notes from Rehn, Hodge, Hebbard, and Roberts, dating from 1904-1957. Notes include localities and specimen lists from expeditions throughout the United States and Mexico, as well as Jamaica and Africa. Several notebooks from J.A.G. Rehn pertain to the 1934 Academy expedition to Africa with George Vanderbilt, and contain lists of wet specimens (not exclusively insects) collected. Frank R. Mason Papers

Frank Mason was an entomologist who willed his collection of Coleoptera to the Academy. These papers consist of correspondence between J.A.G. Rehn of the Entomology Department and Mason's colleagues concerning his death in 1927, and 3 blueprints of storage cases and a floor plan, apparently for Mason's collection but not so identified.

Henry Skinner Papers

Scope and Contents

Trained as a medical man, Skinner devoted much of his later life to entomology, his research interests being in Lepidoptera. He edited Entomological News from 1890-1910. This collection contains correspondence, a bibliography of his writings, a notebook on Lepidoptera, scientific articles and annotations. The latter appear in his Catalogue of North American Rhopalocera, and in Dyar's Catalogue of North American Lepidoptera.
