Scope and Contents

Philadelphia physician and amateur botanist, geologist and photographer, Schaeffer was a member of many cultural institutions in the region. His closest association was with the Academy of Natural Sciences to which he was elected in 1861. He served long terms on the Council and as Recorder, at various times, to the botanical, the biological and the mineralogical and geological sections. The twenty mounted photographs of geological formations were made by him.

Overview Joseph Mellick Leidy (1823-1891), one of the great American scientists of the 19th century, possessed a vast knowledge of the natural world. Best known as the Father of American vertebrate paleontology, he also pioneered the fields of parasitology and protozoology, and was the preeminent anatomist of his time.
