Overview Joseph Mellick Leidy (1823-1891), one of the great American scientists of the 19th century, possessed a vast knowledge of the natural world. Scope and Contents Robert Bridges, president of the Academy in 1864 and 1865, was a botanist. He was chairman of the Botanical Committee for 21 years and worked extensively with the Academy's plant collections, for which he prepared indexes.
