Darlington was a physician, soldier, U.S. Congressman, businessman and a pioneering 19th century botanist in southeastern Pennsylvania. His copy of I. Finch's "Travels in the United States of America and Canada" (London, 1833) contains pencil annotaions and the author's presentation inscription.
